Located in the heart of Taipei, GIEM enjoys convenient access to the city’s rich academic and cultural resources. NTNU is a member of the National Taiwan University System Alliance, together with National Taiwan University and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. Students benefit from shared library resources, cross-registration opportunities, and inter-campus transportation services. Nearby cultural institutions—including the National Theater and Concert Hall, Huashan 1914 Creative Park, Taiwan Music Institute, and the National Central Library—provide abundant resources for research and artistic activities.

The College of Music maintains close partnerships with leading institutions worldwide, including Shanghai Conservatory of Music, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, the University of the Philippines College of Music, Seoul National University, the University of Osaka, Kunitachi College of Music, Kyoto City University of Arts, University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, Sibelius Academy of Uniarts Helsinki, Arizona State University, and the University of California, San Diego. In addition, NTNU has established partnerships with more than 400 universities worldwide, providing students with diverse opportunities for exchange studies, overseas learning, and international collaboration, supported by a variety of scholarships and grants.

GIEM has dedicated classrooms and its own multifunctional performance venue, Alois Osterwalder Hall, and houses an outstanding collection of world musical instruments as well as books and archival materials.

Facilities

In September 2004, the Department of Music and the Institute co-founded the first digital music archive among Taiwan’s music colleges, the Digital Archive Center for Music（DACM）. It dedicated to the digital preservation and multimedia applications of the data collected from ethnographic research of music traditions and cultures. In addition, it facilitates the Institute’s documentation of important music events and activities for future research and access. 

In relation to training in music performance, students of the Institute are provided various performance opportunities on and off campus. Specifically, in recent years the Institute is able to arrange students to perform at national venues such as the Recital Hall of the National Concert Hall. 

The Institute intends to offer students a balanced training in theory and practice, and it has collaborated various key players in music industry, such as Taiwan Music Institute, Wind Music, Muzik International Co., Ltd, and Public Television Service, to offer students internship opportunities. 

♬Audio-visual teaching materials: We purchase the most recent and up-to-date ethnomusicology audio-visual teaching materials every year, including those covering Aboriginal culture, traditional Chinese opera music, nanguan and beiguan, Taiwanese gezaixi opera, modern Chinese music, the performance arts and Western music.

➜Library books and periodicals: Books and periodicals are purchased according to teachers’ needs. Some are borrowed from the library for an extended period of time and kept in the institute, while others are kept in the school’s main library for students to check out. Several well known musicology periodicals in Chinese are available along with periodicals that have been given to the institute. A 2001 edition of the Grove’s Music Dictionary is also available for students and teachers to use.

➜Electronic databases: Alexander Music Online, Oxford Music Online, and the Naxos Music Library were purchased with the Department of Music and the Graduate Institute of Performance Arts. Students can access the databases on the school’s Web site using their student I.D. number and student account password.

➜Precision equipment: For educational purposes, the school has purchased personal computers and laptops for teachers to use. Professional video cameras, digital video cameras, digital cameras, portable stand-up cameras, professional audio recording equipment, and professional digital music archive equipment, are all available for teachers to use during outside class activities.

♬Instruments: Nanguan instruments, Beijing opera gongs and percussion instruments, traditional Chinese instruments, pianos, and various world music instruments are available for classroom and personal use outside the classroom.

➜Other resources: Students from this institute can check out scores and books from the music department library and watch/listen to audio/visual materials in the library. Books from the university library can also be checked out (including the libraries at the main campus, the Linkou campus and the Gongguan campus).

MRT Guting Station ➜ Take the Tamsui-Xinyi Line (Red Line), Zhonghe-Xinlu Line (Orange Line), or Songshan-Xindian Line (Green Line). Leave from Exit 5 of Guting Station, walk straight along Heping East Road, and turn right onto Shida Road. It takes about 10 minutes on foot.

MRT Taipower Building Station ➜ Take the Songshan-Xindian Line (Green Line). Leave from Exit 3 of Taipower Building Station and walk straight along Shida Road for about 8 minutes.

Taipei City Bus ➜ Take bus route 15, 18, 235, 237, 278, 295, 662, 663, 672, 907, or Heping Main Line and get off at the "NTNU Union Building" (師大綜合大樓) or "NTNU" (師大) stop.

National Highway No. 1 (Sun Yat-sen Freeway) ➜ Yuanshan Interchange → Jianguo Elevated Road → Turn right onto Heping East Road → NTNU Main Campus.

National Highway No. 3 (Muzha) ➜ Muzha Interchange → Wanfang Interchange → Xinhai Road → Turn right onto Roosevelt Road → Turn right onto Heping East Road → NTNU Main Campus.
