Guideline for Master’s degree exam
1. Plan of study:
Take the admission -> Take the courses -> Choose a faculty advisor to guide the student’s research -> Complete the required credits -> Completion of the master degree
In order to complete the courses, students are expected to summit their final projects. The final projects can be presented either by a thesis or a folio.
2. Final projects:
i. The thesis requirements:
An original research of the history/culture analysis/sociology/aesthetics or any other aspects of music ethnography. It’s depending on the discipline area of students.
ii. The folio requirements
The folio can either presented by a music performance, media performance or digital collection. The duration of the performance (either music or media) should between 40 to 60 minutes. If the folio is presented by digital collection, student should prepare an audio or a video recording documentary work. The duration of the recording should between 40 to 60 minutes as well. After that, there will be an oral test.
Any three forms of the folio should attach with a research paper which is written in at least 20000 words.
Students will be awarded Master of Fine Arts, M. F. A. after the completion of final projects.
3. The duration of the program is 2 years and upper limit to 4 years.
4. Master Degree examination application requirements:
i. A completion of at least 35 credit points.
ii. The preparation of
a. Application form of master degree examination
b. Application form of declaration of thesis’s originality
c. Course structure grade report.
iii. Foreign language proficiency:
a. Pass the GEPT examination (intermediate level)
b. Pass the TOEFL exam with at least 137 points or IELTS with at least 5.0 score or TOEIC exam with at least 650 points.
c. Pass the Lexile test with at least 600L or pass the provided online “English Grammar Course” course
*The test or the exam should pass within the five years before the admission or 4 years before the application of the master degree exam
iv. Pass the “Turnitin” system plagiarism detection.
v. Pass the “Academic Study Ethics Educational Research” online course.
vi. During the school, student should complete the following any two requirements in order to apply the master’s degree exam:
a. Publish a research paper or complete a music work (includes sound recording, video filming, composition….)
b. Take part in at least 4 music performances
c. Take part in at least 4 media activities which can be about director, score reading, filming or photographing or audio recording.
*The completion of first requirement with 2 music performances and 2 media activities is accepted.
5. Course requirement:
i. Core courses (11 credits)：
Introduction of ethnomusicology, Theory and Practice in Musical Communication, Introduction to philosophy of music, Music Archives and Research Methods, Musical Fieldwork
Required course for music research and inheritance (4 credits):
Study of the Comparison between Chinese and Western Music, Mode of Traditional Music
Required course for multimedia application (4 credits):
History of Sound Recording, Theory and Practice in Musical Multi-media
ii. Elective courses (20 credits):
a. Research and inheritance related courses 4 credits
b. Multimedia application related courses 6 credits
c. Music performances and practical related courses 6 credits
d. Other music related courses 4 credits
iii. Cross-school course selection should be agreed by the advisor. The credit points of cross-school course can’t exceed one third of the total credit points which have been taken in the semester.
6. Application of the research’s advisor should be done before the ending of the second semester of first year.
7. The passing score of the Master’s degree exam is 70.
a.Exam application date: before the end of May or the end of November.
b.After the passing of the application, student should submit his thesis the 14 days before the exam.
c.The exam is usually held in the 3rd & 4th week of January and June.
8. 8. If the student fails in the exam, he can retake it in the next semester. The exam should not be taken exceed twice or else student will be dropped out by school.

Introduction of ethnomusicology, Theory and Practice in Musical Communication, Introduction to philosophy of music, Music Archives and Research Methods, Musical Field Work
Specialize in music research and inheritance (4 credits):
Study of the Comparison between Chinese and Western Music, Mode of Traditional Music
Specialize in multimedia application (4 credits):
History of Sound Recording, Theory and Practice in Musical Multi-media
b) Electives course (20 credits):
i. Research and inheritance related courses 4 credits
ii. Multimedia application related courses 6 credits
iii. Music performances and practical related courses 6 credits
iv. Other music related courses 4 credits
