德國博物館及其音樂典藏─樂器策展、典藏與研究推廣

Title: Curating Musical Instruments at the Deutsches Museum in Munich

The Deutsches Museum in Munich, one of the largest museums of science and technology in the world and one of eight German research museums, houses a vast collection of artefacts, an archive and a library. Part of these is a significant collection of musical instruments. It comprises around 2000 musical instruments of all kinds and more than 4000 programme carriers for musical automata, from the 16th century to the present day. Among the masterpieces are harpsichords from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, organs, keyboard instruments from clavichords to pianos, important automata such as the trumpet automaton and a twittering automaton by Bontems, early electrophones, the Siemens Studio for electronic musical instruments and the estate of Oskar Sala, pioneer of electronic music. The collection also includes a group of instruments from the Datong Society which was acquired by the museum in the 1920s. In her paper Silke Berdux will provide an overview of the collection and an insight into her work with the artefacts and archival sources, talking about projects in the fields of conservation, research, digitization and education. She will also discuss the development and preparation of the new permanent exhibition of instruments, which was opened in summer 2022 and which combines a variety of original artefacts, facsimiles, “hands-on” demonstrations and audiovisual media.
